Six common heat pump myths: what homeowners should know

ECO-TEC – Six common heat pump myths: what homeowners should know

Conținut tehnic ECO-TECPublicat Actualizat

The internet is full of contradictory claims, and discussions online or over coffee can sometimes create more confusion than clarity. If you want to make an informed decision about home comfort, it is worth examining the myths surrounding heat pumps. Some are amusing, others simply inaccurate, but all deserve an explanation. Here are six familiar claims and the facts behind them.

Have you heard about heat pumps but are not sure whether they suit your home?

1. Heat pumps do not work in cold climates

You may have heard that heat pumps are useful only in places with mild winters. The truth? Technology has advanced considerably in recent years, and efficient solutions are now available for even very cold weather conditions.

  • Some modern models are rated to operate at outdoor temperatures as low as -25°C;

  • Air-to-water and ground-source heat pumps can deliver excellent performance in mountain areas that traditionally depended on wood or gas heating.

Nordic countries such as Norway and Sweden provide a clear example: their winters are generally colder than those in Romania, yet heat pumps are widely used. Proper selection for the climate and the building’s heat load is what matters.

Modern heat pumps feature advanced compressors and automatic defrost cycles, making suitable models viable in continental climates. Some also have dedicated controls to maintain heating performance in demanding weather.

2. Electricity consumption is too high

Many people believe that heat pumps use huge amounts of electricity and cause excessive bills. The picture is often quite different.

  • Under favourable conditions, a heat pump can obtain around 75% of its delivered heat from outdoor air, soil or water, with the rest supplied as electricity;

  • For every 1 kWh of electricity consumed, a system operating at COP 4 can deliver approximately 4 kWh of useful heat.

The efficiency of modern systems can help you save in the long term, particularly when paired with solar photovoltaic panels. Many also use smart controls to adapt energy consumption to household demand and weather. You can schedule operating periods and adjust temperatures from a mobile app.

Compared with gas or wood boilers, heat pumps may require less routine attention and avoid direct reliance on fossil-fuel prices. Actual savings depend on electricity tariffs, building heat demand and system efficiency.

3. Installation is too complicated and expensive

Yes, installing a heat pump involves an initial investment. But it is equally important to consider what you already spend on boilers, servicing, repairs and fuel.

  • Over time, a heat pump can become more economical than a conventional heating system, depending on the circumstances;

  • Specialist installation teams can make the process more straightforward than it first appears.

The installation begins with assessing your property, insulation, room sizes and heat-distribution system. A suitable plan is then developed for the chosen air-to-water, water-to-water or ground-source solution. An important benefit? Some systems can provide domestic hot water, space heating in winter and cooling in summer with one integrated installation.

A payback period of 5–10 years is sometimes cited, but actual results vary widely with energy prices, installation cost and demand. Service life can exceed 15–20 years when the equipment is properly maintained.

4. Heat pumps are suitable only for new houses

False! This is one of the most common misconceptions and one of the easiest to challenge.

  • Heat pumps can be integrated into existing homes, particularly where underfloor heating or low-temperature radiators are already installed;

  • With appropriate improvements, they can also heat older properties efficiently.

You do not need to build a brand-new house to enjoy greater comfort and lower energy consumption. Ask a specialist to evaluate the options for your property.

Hybrid systems can work alongside an existing boiler and give you flexibility as you move towards lower-carbon heating. You could begin with a domestic hot water heat pump and expand the installation later.

5. They cannot provide enough heat in winter

Worried about feeling cold when the outdoor temperature reaches -10°C? A correctly designed modern system can handle such conditions.

  • Heat pumps can maintain indoor comfort even during cold winter days;

  • Smart controls and sensors can regulate output automatically;

  • High-performance models can deliver stable indoor temperatures without uncomfortable swings.

In addition, you can combine the heat pump with a backup source, such as an electric boiler or another suitable heater, although it may not be needed. In a well-insulated house, an appropriately sized air-to-water heat pump can cover the full design heating load.

6. Heat pumps cannot provide heating and cooling

Another misconception is that heat pumps produce only heat. In fact, many models are reversible and can also deliver cooling.

  • In summer, they can provide space cooling when connected to suitable indoor equipment;

  • Some systems support individual room temperature control.

In practice, you can have two functions in one system, saving space and potentially reducing equipment and maintenance costs. This can simplify the home installation while improving year-round comfort.

Hydronic cooling can also be quiet and comfortable when correctly designed, although noise and air movement depend on the indoor units and the chosen system.

Heat pumps are not merely a passing fashion. They can be an intelligent, sustainable, financially attractive long-term choice. If misconceptions have held you back, you now have a clearer starting point for comparing your options.
