How to size a heat pump correctly for your home

Conținut tehnic ECO-TECPublicat Actualizat

Are you seriously thinking about installing a heat pump in your home? It is an excellent choice! Heat pumps can significantly reduce heating costs while helping protect the environment. However, choosing the right size is essential to benefit fully. A heat pump that is too small or too large can lead to frustration, increased energy consumption and extra expenses.

So how do you find the right unit? Follow this step-by-step guide to choosing the best option for your home. It is less complicated when you know which factors matter and have a few key details available.

Why does correct heat pump sizing matter?

An undersized heat pump may run almost continuously without reaching the desired temperature, leading to premature wear and higher maintenance costs.

You may also struggle to maintain comfort on freezing winter days and eventually regret the choice. Conversely, an oversized heat pump may start and stop frequently, wasting energy and shortening its service life.

Balance is the key. A pump matched to your home’s needs operates efficiently, quietly and economically. You can save money, reduce environmental impact and enjoy consistent indoor comfort.

Want to cut heating costs? Then it is essential to understand how to choose a heat pump that suits your home.

Key factors when sizing a heat pump

Several parameters affect the correct choice:

  • home floor area — the larger the home, the greater the energy demand. A studio apartment has very different heating requirements from a two-storey villa;

  • thermal insulation — a well-insulated home retains heat better and needs less heating energy. Assess external walls, windows, roof and floors;

  • geographical location — living in the mountains or a region with harsh winters may require more heating capacity. In milder climates, the requirement is lower;

  • number of occupants — more people generally means greater domestic hot water consumption. This affects the size of the tank and hot water preparation system;

  • existing heating distribution — traditional radiators operate at higher water temperatures, while underfloor heating needs lower temperatures and can improve heat pump efficiency.

All these factors should be considered together to obtain a clear picture of the heating load. Working with a specialist who can carry out a detailed heat-loss calculation is recommended.

Use our heat pump sizing calculator for houses and homes to quickly estimate the required capacity and identify a suitable solution.

Indicative calculations for preliminary sizing

As a general rule, a well-insulated home may have a heating requirement of 50–60 W/m². For a 150 m² house, that suggests a heat pump of approximately 9 kW.

But do not rely solely on broad estimates. For example:

  • an older, uninsulated home may require 80–100 W/m²;

  • a passive or very well-insulated building may need only 30–40 W/m².

For a 120 m² home with average insulation and three occupants, a quick calculation might indicate 7–8 kW. If you also add a domestic hot water cylinder, an extra 1–2 kW may be required.

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Ignoring heat losses — Never assume that insulation is perfect. Heat escaping through the roof, windows and floors directly affects the heating load. Arrange a complete assessment.

  2. Overestimating requirements — A larger heat pump is not necessarily better. It can mean unnecessary expenditure and inefficient operation.

  3. Overlooking domestic hot water demand — A buffer vessel or hot water storage system can make a difference. Consider your family’s daily routine.

  4. Skipping professional advice — Avoid choosing equipment based solely on price or forum recommendations. What works for someone else may not work for you.
