Rated capacity alone is not enough
Industrial buildings can have very different loads during the day and week. Warehouses with air heaters, fan-coil areas, offices and process loads may require different temperatures and flow rates.
Modular systems and cascades
For larger duties, several units operating in cascade can be more practical than one large source. Modular systems can provide staging, partial redundancy and better adaptation to seasonal load.
High temperatures and existing-system retrofit
Before selecting a heat pump, determine the lowest supply temperature at which the existing distribution system can satisfy the building or process. Reducing required temperature can materially improve seasonal efficiency.
Heating and cooling through the same infrastructure
Hydronic heat pumps can potentially provide winter heating and summer cooling through fan coils, air-handling units or other compatible terminals.
Economic analysis should use annual energy
A comparison with conventional sources should not be based only on installed capacity. Annual load profile, water temperatures, energy tariffs and operating costs should be considered.
