HEATING SYSTEM MODERNISATION

Replacing a wood boiler with a heat pump

Moving from a wood-fired boiler to a heat pump can eliminate manual fuel loading, wood storage and much of the day-to-day maintenance associated with a conventional solid-fuel system.

What changes in everyday use?

A wood boiler requires fuel purchasing, storage, loading, cleaning and supervision. A heat pump automates heat production and can combine space heating, domestic hot water and, where the distribution system allows it, cooling.

Can the existing heating system be retained?

In many projects a significant part of the existing installation can remain, but it must be checked. Radiators, pipework, manifolds and circulation pumps should be evaluated at the required flow rates and water temperatures.

What happens to the existing buffer tank?

A buffer tank designed around a wood boiler can be much larger than the optimum volume for a heat pump. It should not automatically be retained simply because it already exists.

Is an electric backup heater required?

An auxiliary electric heater can be included for specific operating conditions, but it should not compensate for an undersized heat pump. Correct sizing starts from design heat demand and real model performance.

The first step before conversion

Determine building heat loss, radiator water-temperature requirements, available electrical supply and domestic-hot-water demand. These factors show whether the conversion is straightforward or requires modifications.

Frequently asked questions

Do all radiators need to be replaced?

Not automatically. Their output should be checked against room heat demand at the planned supply temperature.

Can the wood boiler remain as backup?

A bivalent system is technically possible, but hydraulics and controls must be specifically designed for two heat sources.

Can the heat pump also produce domestic hot water?

Yes, when the system includes a suitable cylinder and control strategy.

Can I reuse my large existing buffer tank?

Sometimes, but it is not automatically the optimum solution. Its volume and hydraulic role should be reassessed.

Do I need a three-phase electrical supply?

It depends on the selected model and electrical demand. The available supply should be checked before equipment selection.
